چکیده

Efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change have led research and industry groups to explore ways of applying existing technologies and practices to the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions. The storage of CO2 in underground geologic reservoirs is one such idea that employs techniques developed for oil and gas production and transmission. For example, CO2 has been injected into petroleum reservoirs for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) since the 1970’s. By 2000, there were a total of 84 operations worldwide (72 in US) involving enhanced oil recovery using CO2 floods (Kinder Morgan, 2001). CO2 has also been injected and stored in underground formations for the purpose of acid gas (H2S, CO2 and other impurities from gas separation plants) disposal. These experiences, as well as others, have helped to make geologic storage of CO2 a viable strategy for CO2 reduction.

Development of a framework for long-term performance assessment of geologic CO2 sequestration sites

Long-term performance and risk assessment related to geologic CO2 storage needs a robust and reliable framework. We have used the science based prediction approach to develop such a framework. The approach couples the fundamental physical and chemical processes to a systems level model. The coupling is achieved by developing probability functions through integration of laboratory/field experime...

Water Challenges for Geologic Carbon Capture and Sequestration

Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) has been proposed as a means to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the continued use of fossil fuels. For geologic sequestration, the carbon dioxide is captured from large point sources (e.g., power plants or other industrial sources), transported to the injection site and injected into deep geological formations for storage. This will produ...

Significance of Conceptual Model Uncertainty in Simulating Carbon Sequestration in a Deep Inclined Saline Aquifer

In modeling geologic carbon sequestration in a deep inclined aquifer in Wyoming, the impact of geologic, engineering, and environmental uncertainty factors on parameter importance and prediction uncertainty is evaluated. Given site characterization data, a suite of geologic model families were built to represent aquifer permeability heterogeneity at increasing complexity. With each family, the ...
